FAQ

About Us

What if I have two left feet?
Modern Jive has simple footwork and beginners classes are aimed at people with no previous dance experience. Don't assume that everyone else is going to be better than you. You will be able to wow friends with your new found skill after a few lessons. If you have already learnt different dance styles, you still need to start as a beginner but will find you progress quicker and the teacher will give extra styling tips for each of the moves

Can I just come and watch?
Because of the way a Modern Jive night runs you will be far more conspicuous if you stand around the edge watching ,so join in, some of the people you dance with in the class will be better than you and some will be at pretty much the same level, learn from them as well as the teacher. All of the crew at any decent Modern Jive night will be aware that when people walk in for the first time they may have no idea what will happen. It is more than likely that someone will be on hand to explain what is going on and what to do. Probably the best thing to remember when you start is that it’s not rocket science, just go with the flow and you will fit straight in no problem.

Do I need someone to go with?
Don't worry the teaching method ensures you will dance with many different people of varying abilities, some there for their first time and some more advanced who will help you and speed up your learning process.
There is no requirement to bring a partner, as ladies rotate during class you are welcome to come with a partner or friends, the more the merrier.

When can I start?
Because of the way Modern Jive is taught it means that you do not have to book a course of lessons which start with the basics and proceed from there. At most venues there are at least a couple or more newcomers every week so it is highly unlikely that you will be on your own. Even if you are the only new person that week  there will be the people who were new last week or the week before. It is more than likely that last weeks newcomers will be seeing all of this week moves  for the first time and are in the same boat as you .

How old are the dancers coming along?
People of all ages enjoy Modern Jive from 16 and upward with many  people way into their retirement enjoying a social life that is better than it has ever been.

What do I wear?

Comfortable easy to move in clothing advisable, wear shoes with a slippery sole for spinning, no stillettos or steel caps! Men should bring a towel and spare top as close moves can be involved (ladies much prefer a nice clean smelling dance partner). Ladies also please be considerate to the men.

What if I can’t come every week?

Because we teach new moves each lesson and there are so many to learn, you will still learn a good dance repertoire of moves by coming regularly when you can.

How social is Modern Jive?

Freestyle time is available after every class, this is where the music is played and you can practice all the different moves you have learnt in any order. The teacher will be available for questions or help if required, just ask. Ladies please feel free to ask the men to dance as the men can be shy! Parties and social events will be organised for you to join in with you new found dancing friends. And of course with Modern Jive you can dance anywhere, pubs, clubs, weddings, discos etc

What if the blokes at work find out?

Just respond to your work colleagues “If Norm Hewitt, Frank Bunce and Steve Gurney are man enough, then so am I”. Nine times out of ten, there are more women than men. Usually the numbers are not that uneven and due to the constant rotation of people during the classes this does not present any inconvenience at all, however, when the classes are done and you get to the part of the evening called "freestyle" where you put into practice what you have learnt, a good male dancer will never be short of a partner.

What if something goes wrong?

Don't Panic. If you forget something while doing the class or something doesn't go quite right then don't worry about it. The whole point of Modern Jive is that it is fun and not a school of perfection, no one will mind, we were all beginners once, simply try again and don't give up. Also don't be afraid to ask the teacher questions when they have finished their classes as they will usually take you through any problems with the moves one to one.

Who leads?

Men lead and ladies don't. If both of you try to lead neither of you will win and you simply won't be able to dance.

How serious is it?
At least 50% of the enjoyment of learning Modern Jive is having the opportunity to meet new friends and have a fun night out. If you join in and try your best without taking it too

seriously you will almost certainly have a great time.
